Overview
This May, seventeen cultural practitioners from over 10 different countries will spend two weeks in Downtown Cairo as part of the upcoming Open Studio Project, an international artists’ residency programme hosted annually by the Townhouse Gallery of contemporary art. The programme is designed to serve as a platform for dialogue and creative collaboration among residency participants and between participants and various publics, shifting the focus away from the production of work and towards alternative models of international exchange. Participants in Open Studio 2006 hail from Egypt, India, Brazil, the US, UK, Turkey, Botswana, Lebanon, Switzerland, Pakistan, Germany and Holland, respectively.
The practices of the participating artists, musicians and curators reflect a diversity of creative approaches to and engagements with sound, whether as a visceral or aural material, conceptual or contextual reference, or as a point of departure. At once intersecting and diverging, these diverse practices reflect the ability of sound-related work to complicate neat categories of artistic production and their conventionally associated frameworks, technologies, tools, and skills. These dynamics provide a context for the model of international exchange explored in the Open Studio Project.
Open Studio Project 2006 is inspired by Cairo’s rich aural environment, one shaped by the city’s diverse narratives of sound, sound-making traditions and ongoing explorations of sound in contemporary music and the arts. Participants are invited to draw on this urban environment as a creative resource. A “scattered studio” or series of independent studios and work spaces located in various areas of the city will also be available for use by residency participants.
For the first time, a Public Programme will be presented in tandem with the Residency Programme, introducing publics to the issues explored in Open Studio and offering channels for engagement with residency participants. The Public Programme includes, an interactive installation and performance, a collaborative art work/video game, a discussion on curatorial practice in relation to sound work, and a two-day event where residency participants will "open their studios", present work to the public and be available for discussion. A workshop on open source programming from an artist’s perspective, as well as an online discussion addressing the roles of ownership and authorship in relation to individual practices in the fields of arts and technology are designed to highlight the creative and philosophical resonances between contemporary art and open culture.

Townhouse Gallery of contemporary art
The Townhouse Gallery of contemporary art is an independent non-profit arts institution dedicated to expanding the parameters of public discourse and the independent arts in Egypt and the region. The Townhouse has been catalytic in the development of independent visual and performance arts in Egypt and serves as one of the region's most important access points for international artistic exchange. The gallery offers year-round curated exhibitions, theatre and music performances and a curated film programme. The gallery's Outreach Programme coordinates the use of rehearsal space and offers educational programmes for underserved local constituencies, including working children, people hailing from refugee contexts and women in Upper Egypt. Townhouse also organizes the annual PhotoCairo festival and the Open Studio Project.
The gallery's mission and self-conceptualization are fundamentally informed by its relationship with surrounding communities and local constituencies and the development of local capacity is central to its mandate.
Triangle Arts Trust
Triangle Arts Trust, a registered UK charity, was founded by Sir Anthony Caro and Robert Loder in 1982. Triangle initiates and facilitates an international network of artist-led workshops and residencies which engage audiences through public events and exhibitions. Each workshop is organised by a Working Group of local artists responsible for both fund-raising and logistics. These activities build confidence and self-reliance and attract voluntary input from the local community. Over 2,500 artists have participated in the network’s workshops, residencies and exhibitions over the past two decades. Triangle now offers nine associated studio buildings hosting international residencies, exhibitions, education programmes and off-site events workshops on a continuing basis in over 20 countries.This network is continually expanding to include new workshops, residencies and studios that are being established in the coming year in China, Taiwan, Australia, Bangladesh, Scotland and Ghana. Open Studio 2006 will serve as a platform for launching a Triangle programme in Egypt.
Statement of Curatorial Process
Open Studio Project 2006 was organized by Clare Davies, Associate Curator at the Townhouse Gallery of contemporary art.The curatorial process behind the selection of Open Studio has been informed by ongoing discussions with participating artists, independent curators and especially, the Triangle Arts Trust as a main partner.
Independent curators associated with the Triangle Arts Trust include, Helmut Batista (Brazil) and Pooja Sood (India). Basak Senova (Turkey) and Regine Basha (USA) have also been critical contributors in the curatorial process.

Multiplace is a virtual festival in which serves a a framework for coordinating and sharing related events around the world via the Internet. This year, Multiplace features events Bratislava (Slovakia), Trnava (Slovakia), Zilina (Slovakia), Kosice (Slovakia), Brno (Czech Republic), Prague (Czech Republic), Hainburg (Austria), Wien (Austria), Glasgow (UK), Cairo (Egypt), and Providence (USA).

يحضر إلى القاهرة فى مايو القادم سبعة عشر من ممارسى الثقافة من عشر بلدان مختلفة لقضاء اسبوعين فى منطقة وسط البلد وذلك فى سياق مشروع الاستوديو المفتوح وهو برنامج لاقامة الفنانين الزائرين يقوم جاليرى التاونهاوس للفن المعاصر بتنظيمه بشكل سنوى. يهدف البرنامج لتقديم منبر للحوار والتعاون الابداعى بين الفنانين الزائرين والمحليين والجمهور على نحو ينقل بؤرة التركيز من مرحلة انتاج العمل إلى النسق البديلة للتبادل الدولى. يشارك فى الاستوديو المفتوح 2006 فنانون من مصر والهند والبرازيل والولايات المتحدة والمملكة المتحدة وتركيا وبوتسوانا ولبنان وسويسرا وباكستان والمانيا وهولندا.
تعكس مساهمات الفنانين والموسيقيين وخبراء التنسيق الفنى المشاركون فى الاستوديو نطاقا واسعا من الرؤى الفنية الخاصة بالصوت والتى تشمل منطلقات فكرية وتكوينية متنوعة. من خلال التداخل والتباعد فى المساهمات، يتعرف الجمهور على اكثر من طريقة يمكن بها للعمل الصوتى أن يساهم فى الانتاج الفنى من خلال تكنولوجيات ومواهب وادوات متعددة. وبهذا يتكون لدينا مفوم جديد للتبادل الدولى من خلال ديناميكية متعددة الجوانب.
الاستوديو المفتوح 2006 هو مشروع يستلهم البيئة السمعية الثرية لمدينة القاهرة، وهى المدينة التى تعرف بتقاليدها الثرية من القصص المسموع والتراث السمعى والتى مازالت تستكشف طرفا جديدة لاستخدام الصوت فى الموسيقى المعاصرة والفنون. سيطلب من المشاركين ان يستلهموا البيئة الحضرية فى سياق ابداعى. وسيمكن للمشاركين استخدام "الاستوديو المبعثر" أو عديد من الاستوديوهات المستقلة واماكن العمل الموجودة فى انحاء متفرقة من العاصمة فى التحضير لأعمالهم.
للمرة الأولى، سيتم تقديم برنامج عام فى سياق برامج الاقامة للفنانين الزائرين، وهو ما يسمح للجمهور بمتابعة المواضيع التى يتم استقصاؤها فى سياق الاستوديو المفتوح وذلك على نحو يوفر قنوات للاتصال بالفنانين المقيمين. يشمل البرنامج العام تجهيزا يتفاعل مع المشاهد وعرضا ادائيا ولعبة متعددة الاطراف من الاعمال الفنية والفيديو وحوارا حول انتقاء الاعمال الفنية التى تتضمن عنصر الصوت، إلى جانب يومين من النشاط الادائى المقدم للجمهور. تقام فى سياق المشروع ورشة عمل عن البرمجة من المصادر المفتوحة وحوار حول اهمية المصدر المفتوح والبرمجة فى مصر، وذلك على نحو يسمح بالقاء الضوء على العلاقة الابداعية والفلسفية بين حركات المصدر المفتوح العالمية والمحلية وبين مناهج الفن الحديثة.

جاليرى التاونهاوس للفن المعاصر
جاليرى التاونهاوس للفن المعاصر هو مؤسسة فنية مستقلة لا تهدف للربح وتسخر جهدها لتوسيع نطاق الخطاب العام والفنون المستقلة فى مصر والمنطقة. اسهم الجاليرى من خلال انشطته بشكل حيوى فى تنمية الفنون البصرية والادائية المستقلة فى مصر ويعد بهذا احد اهم مراكز التبادل العالمى الفنى الهامة فى المنطقة. يقدم الجاليرى عروضا فنية مختارة بعناية على مدار العام إلى جانب عروض موسيقية ومسرحية وبرنامجا للأفلام المنتقاة. وللجاليرى برنامجا للاتصال بالبيئة المحلية يقوم من خلاله بتوفير اماكن للتدريب وبرامج تعليمية لعدة مجموعات لا تصل إليها الرعاية بالشكل الكافى، مثل الأطفال العاملين ومجتمعات اللاجئين والنساء فى صعيد مصر. ويقوم التاونهاوس بتنظيم مهرجان فوتوكايرو السنوى وايضا مشروع الاستوديو المفتوح.
فى مهمته وتصوره لرسالته يستلهم الجاليرى علاقته بالمجتمع المحلى المجاور والسكان المحليين ويهدف بشكل أساسى إلى تنمية مواهب المجتمع المحلى.
تراينجل آرتس تراست
تراينجل آرتس تراست هى منظمة خيرية معتمدة فى المملكة المتحدة، اسسها السير انثونى كارو وروبرت لودر عام 1982. تنظم تراينجل وتساهم فى تنظيم شبكة دولية من الورش الفنية ومشروعات اقامة الفنانين التى تهدف لمخاطبة الجمهور من خلال المناسبات المفتوحة والعروض. يقوم بتنظيم اى ورشة عمل مجموعة من الفنانين المحليين تكون مسئولة عن جمع التمويل اللازم والجوانب التنظيمية المختلفة. من خلال تلك الأنشطة، يتم رفع مستوى الثقة والاعتماد على الذات وايضا تحفيز المبادرة الطوعية من المجتمع المحلى. اشترك أكثر من 2500 فنان حتى الآن فى ورش الشبكة وبرامج الاقامة والعروض التى تمت عبر العقدين الماضيين. ولدى تراينجل حاليا تسعة مبانى استوديوهات مشتركة تستخدم فى برامج اقامة الفنانين والعروض والبرامج التعليمية كما تسهم المنظمة فى اقامة وتنظيم مناسبات وورش عمل فى اكثر من عشرين دولة بشكل مستمر.
تقوم الشبكة بالتوسع باستمرار لتضم ورش عمل وبرامج اقامة واستوديوهات جديدة، مثل تلك التى ستقام فى العام المقبل فى الصين وتايوان واستراليا وبنجلاديش واسكتلندا وغانا. ويمثل استوديو 2006 محطة انطلاق لانشطة تراينجل فى مصر.
